There's something magical about the combination of intercooled turbocharged Buick Regals and the balmy late summer weather of Bristol Dragway. Yeah, folks will talk about how great the GS Nationals were--no argument here--but if you really want a treat for your eyes as well as your accelerative senses, Bristol wins hands down for its beauty, its accomodating staff, and its world-class facility. Trust us, we've been all over this great country to tracks everywhere and Bristol Dragway is one of a kind!
While Buicks At Bristol caters to all ages of Flynt's flyers, attendance was dominated this past September by the later fuel-injected cars (both rearwheel drive and frontwheel drive). As GMHTP caters to these high-tech beasts, that's all right by us! And all the better for the racers that Bristol was the place because with the kind of torque these boosted Buicks make, they would've had a hard time hooking up anywhere else. That track hooked so well that we counted at least a half-dozen blown rearends--a testament to the fine track preparation by Bristol's staff.
Best of all, we got to meet up with old friends like Jack Pendzimas, Chris Lyons, Jack Cotton, Rob Raymer, Bob Peterson, Patrick Rubio, Dave Fiscus and Ron Kincaid. We made lots of new friends too like Paul Ferry, John Schmidt (love that Opel GT!), and Steve Chlupsa (Hooo! Hooo!).
A lucky few were even chosen to be featured in future issues of GMHTP. Look for the turbocharged beasts of Lyman "Buster" Covert, David "Moose" Knight, and Lonny Gupton. These guys worked hard all year to get their cars in tip-top shape--both aesthetically and athletically. And all that work went in before our grueling photo sessions! Those of you who didn't make the cut--don't worry, there's always next year!
