When deciding to stay all-motor, the intake and exhaust system become crucial in maximizing the efficiency of the LS1. On the intake side, Obrizok mail-ordered a FAST LSX intake and a Nick Williams 90mm throttle body. Meanwhile the exhaust system required spending a day at Kooks Custom Headers in Bayshore, New York, to obtain a custom true dual exhaust paired with Kooks 1 3/4 to 1 7/8-inch stepped long tube race headers. The Kooks crew bent up a rattle-free, tight fitting exhaust with 3-inch 304 stainless steel tubing, an X-pipe, two resonators, and two mufflers with Corsa tips. The result was a deep and mean exhaust note without a hint of raspiness.
By Jon's calculations, the 455 LS1 is capable of far-overshadowing a stock LS7 by over 100 horsepower. So a SPEC 3+ clutch and aluminum flywheel along with a PST 3.5-inch aluminum driveshaft would be required at the very least to withstand this kind of power behind a stock T56. A Moser 12-bolt with 33-spline axles, 3.73 gear, and a posi were also a must for collecting the 10-second timeslip Jon desired. A BMR sway bar was added to the stock front suspension to improve handling, while BMR subframe connectors attach the front end to the fully built rear. A full complement of BMR Fabrication components including control arms, panhard bar, torque arm and swaybar line the rear end. The combination allows 1.55 short times while using 18-inch C6 wheels and low profile BFG drag radials. No attempt at weight savings is made in the street-going TA, which boasts an entirely stock interior aside from a hidden Raptor shift light. The expense and weight of a roll cage has been spared, making him an unwelcome customer at most NHRA tracks after running 10.92 at 127 mph at Atco Raceway. This is inconsequential to Jon, as he built the TA for the street. The only question: Can the street handle his 455 TA?
Jon Obrizok's low-mile TA had not a scratch on her, which made for some of the nicest stock paint you'll ever see on an F-body. | Chrome C6 wheels adorn this 3,450-pound streetcar (with driver) measuring 18x9.5 in the front and 18x10.5 in the rear. The low profile BFG drag radials don't make for ideal drag strip traction, but still allowed a 1.55-sixty foot time with the 3.73 gear and BMR suspension. | The interior is no different than any stock '02 WS6 with a Hurst shifter manipulating the T56, aside from a Raptor shift light neatly stowed behind one of the HVAC vents in the dash. Along with the T56, a SPEC 3+ clutch calls the shots, unloading the 455's fury on a Moser 12-bolt rear. |
