Precision Industries' Vigilante 3200-stall with manual electronic lockup handles the quick-spooling GT turbo's modest converter needs; however, the serious power numbers from the Cartek motor and STS turbo setup demand quite a bit from the transmission. So Cartek sent the stock 4L60E to well-trusted RPM Transmissions in Daleville, Indiana, for a Stage IV build. A Trans-Go Shift-Kit, RPM clutch packs, 4L65E low roller clutch, billet Fourth Gear servo, and a few other heavy-duty components guarantee at least 600 worry-free rear-wheel horsepower. With an entirely stock suspension and Mickey Thompson drag radials mounted on lightweight Bogart 16-inch wheels, the GTO is still capable of 1.54 short times. Meanwhile, stock brakes, suspension, and a stout Eclipse/JL Audio sound system do nothing to lower curb weight. On the street, Nick rolls on Bayern Type 5 18x8.5 front and 18x9.5 rear rims, boasting high-end Michelin Pilot PS2 245/40/18 and 265/40/18 rubber.
Despite the 18-inch rims, thumping sound system, and overpowering torque, Nick's GTO now appears just as unassuming as it did the day it rolled off of the Australian assembly line. It has style, class, and sophistication-but the soul of a true hot rod. Take that, BMW!
The '04 Goats look like they were made to have the STS remote turbo system mounted just behind the bumper. In Nick's case, a Garrett GT67 was selected and assembled by the folks at STS. A TiAl wastegate vents the unneeded exhaust to maintain 13 psi of boost. |  |
