With such a storied heritage as the Corvette race team, Pratt & Miller most assuredly worked very hard at not only increasing the handling of the already formidable Z06, but also preserving ride quality. Again, the goal was a true supercar package, not a race car you can drive on the street. In that vein, the ride height was lowered 1.5 inches via a C6RS exclusive composite leaf-spring and air-spring combination. For aesthetics and practicality, ArvinMeritor Dynamic Height Control gives the user three ride height levels for park, drive, and entry to protect the precious carbon-fiber body pieces. The brakes were upgraded to match the substantial jump in power using Brembo six-piston monoblock front calipers with 14-inch discs and an aluminum hat, and four-piston monoblock rear calipers with 13.5-inch rear discs also with aluminum hat and integrated parking brake. Even the brake fluid has been upgraded using hi-temp AP600, which also has the benefit of ample CF brake ducts and vents to prevent fade.
If you didn't come to this conclusion at first glance of the C6RS, I'm sure by now you are realizing that it is most assuredly the ultimate Corvette. It is as close, probably as anyone will ever come, to building a street-legal GT1 car with this level of refinement and civility. Moreover, it will also be one of the rarest special edition Corvettes ever made at a mere 25 per year. The price of exclusivity is well over two hundred grand total, but the reward is immortality.
Among his many awards and victories, Ron Fellows has claimed multiple ALMS and 24 Hours of Le Mans championships since he began his career with the Corvette Racing Team in 1998. He was commissioned by Pratt & Miller, who built his championship-winning C5R and C6.R race cars, to lend his expertise in tuning the sophisticated air suspension. Ron flogged the C6RS at multiple road courses throughout the country, including Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, where he will be helping to teach all 25 C6RS owners, as required by Pratt & Miller to complete the purchase. Ron said that during development the biggest point of contention was adding stiffness while not degrading the ride quality. When I asked him how the C6RS compares to the C6.R he said: "For a production car, it's that much closer ... the power, the brakes, the tires. The C6RS revs higher than the race car since it doesn't have the air restrictor, but the power curve feels comparable." Overall, Ron seemed very pleased with the Vette: "It's outstanding. I love the carbon-fiber body. I just need a bigger garage."
A torque wrench and massive... A torque wrench and massive single-bolt wheel lock socket comes with every C6RS, and is mounted in its own fashionable container just behind the seats. For more substantial issues than simply changing the tires, Pratt & Miller has a dedicated technician to fly around the country to service all 25 of the fleet and accommodate its many highly specialized components. Each car comes with a 24-month or 24,000-mile warranty. | Michelin worked closely with... Michelin worked closely with Pratt & Miller to optimize the tire combination based on the weight balance of the C6RS and Ron Fellows's input. After playing around with the front tire size, PS2s in 295/30/18 and 345/30/19 were settled on. | |
