As of last night, GM has set the trend of more efficient yet powerful, smaller displacement powerplants in its 2015 car and truck lineup - starting with the GMC Canyon. Well, smaller by GM standards... So it should come as no surprise that the 2015 Corvette Z06 sports a supercharged 6.2L LT4 and the C7.R uses a 5.5L V-8.

During its press launch, we followed the live feed as the Z06 made its way from HQ to COBO Hall at the 2014 North American Auto Show in Detroit, MI. Meanwhile the second Z06 waited patiently under a black cover, with only its muscular silhouette apparent, and a C7.R stayed back stage. GM's worst kept secret was no less impactfull as the media fought for a clear shot of Chevrolet's 625hp supercar.

Though many had hoped for a DI 427 engine in the Z, GM was not afraid to break with tradition using the blower to create a more capable, track friendly engine that is also incredibly efficient. The removable carbon roof and 8-speed automatic were two other surprises that took advantage of advanced technology, boasting the stiffest aluminum frame and highest capacity auto trans to date. But perhaps the most impressive aspect is the close resemblance of the Z06 and C7.R. Chevrolet president Ed Welburn remarked how closely the two teams worked, as the Z's racebred heritage translated easily to a full-on racecar - both hoping to achieve the same goal of superior aerodynamics.
