Currently the quickest and fastest in the country, the Fastlane 2010 Camaro proves that a well thought out single turbo combination is always hard to beat. Starting with the ZL1 Turbo kit, which includes a top-mounted Borg Warner 72mm turbocharger, Fastlane has concentrated on making a ton of power using the stock LS3, a plan that seems to be paying off. In an unusual twist, Fastlane has decided to use a manual LS3, which makes it not only the fastest overall 2010, but also the fastest 6-speed on the list.

It's hard to believe the GS Nationals are about to eclipse the 30-year mark, and even harder to believe that there are no signs of slowing down by the Buick fanatics. Turnout for the 2009 event May 5-9 was as high as it's ever been-as some of the older members of the club seem to be fading out, new blood has managed to step in and inject new life into the GS Club of America (GSCA). This year all the talk was about who would be the first to run 7s in Turbo Street Outlaw (TSO), the hopefuls being Tony Gomes and Dave Fiscus. The two are best of friends, run a similar setup utilizing Cal Hartline's tuning expertise, and both spend the rest of the year in a local stock suspension, drag radial class. Many were also speculating that Don Cruz had a shot, in the Turbo Street Modified (TSM) class, of going 8s-almost unthinkable with a stock block. Of course, Red Armstrong was the center of controversy with his gold '87 T in the new Turbo Street Appearing (TSA) class as over $3,200 was up for grabs to the fastest Buick with no visible mods. Yes, it's true. At the 24 Hours of LeMons, you enter a $500 car in a bent-wheel-to-bent-wheel race against other knuckle-dragging meatheads like yourself while praying that you, your car, and the other members of your dim-witted team will last the entire duration of a weekend that your insurance agent will want to forget. While many racers from the upper echelons of motorsport deem the 24 Hours of LeMons too low-brow to even bother learning about, guys like Jay Lamm, the chromosome-deficient inventor of this anti-Pelosi pep rally finds complete inner harmony in offering a venue for real-world racers to laugh, race, and get pelted with tofu (more on that later).

JE PISTONS LSX DRAG RADIAL
Drag Radial is the hottest class in drag racing right now, and the LSX Shootout is no exception. What could be more exciting than seeing a full-bodied GM car or truck with a big turbo, blower, or nitrous blast down the track in 7 or 8 seconds using a DOT radial? To add to the excitement, contestants at the Shootout are limited to a 295-series tire-so it's not just who can make the most power, but who can get down the track. The past two years Drag Radial has attracted the fastest LS-powered cars in the country, and has seen some impressive showdowns. With a .400 Pro Tree and a heads-up format, it's anyone's game.

If there is one performance limitation to hydraulic roller lifters it is the maximum rpm capability they can maintain in race applications. The internal hydraulics of standard roller lifters are susceptible to pumping up around 6,200-6,500 rpm, causing horsepower robbing valve float along with the possibility of severe valvetrain damage. At this point there are two options for racers: 1) Switch to a solid roller setup, which requires various upgrades and routine maintenance or 2) Upgrade to a Lunati High RPM lifter and get the rpm capabilities similar to a solid roller with the long, maintenance-free life of a hydraulic roller.

GMHTP 2010 CAMARO SHOOTOUT
In celebration of the recently released 2010 Camaro, GM High-Tech Performance is sponsoring a heads-up race that will take place on Sunday, October 18th. Each contestant will be required to register and compete in the Tremec True Street class (see page A10) on Saturday and complete all three runs, only the fastest eight 2010s will be selected. The eight competitors who have the fastest three-pass averages will be placed on a Sportsman ladder and will race heads-up on a .400 Pro Tree. Each Camaro must have an LS or LLT (V-6)-based motor, OEM-style transmission, electronic fuel injection, and be stock appearing. Racing seats are permitted, and each car must comply with applicable NHRA and NMCA safety rules. The winner will receive an LSX block courtesy of Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center as well as an LSX Shootout jacket, plaque, and a feature in GM High-Tech Performance magazine. The runner-up will be awarded a jacket and a plaque; all contestants will receive LSX Shootout T-shirts and subscriptions to GMHTP.

The LSX Shootout car show will be a part of the already huge NMCA Auto Show & Shine, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17th and 18th. "These car show classes have been created to showcase and recognize the best LS-powered vehicles at the LSX Shootout," said Charlie Harmon, President of the NMCA series. "The LSX Shootout car show is as important as the drag race-we will have something for everyone who wants to bring their LS-powered car to participate in this historic event."

Who says you can't go fast without boost? Turbo cars may be all the rage, but to these purists-they'd rather die than use anything other than God's own 14.7 psi. These 8 and 9-second au natural LS1s are forces to be reckoned with for 2009.

The School of Automotive Machinists is proud to announce the start of our new Automotive Engine CNC Machining Program beginning Summer of 2009. This course will allow students to learn and gain experience in the setup, programming and operation of five-axis CNC machining. Students will thoroughly explore all aspects of the machining center including digitizing and G-code programming. With the industry quickly turning to these highly sophisticated and accurate machines, this course will qualify graduates as a CNC automotive machinist. The course will also prepare them for employment in the more technologically advanced shops in motorsports. The CNC class will be taught on an industry leading Haas ES-5-4T Horizontal Machining Center allowing hands-on training from the most basic techniques to complex fifth-axis cylinder head porting. Students will thoroughly explore all aspects of CNC machining including coordinate geometry, control systems programming, tool function, and hands-on machining. The dedicated classroom is equipped with Dell Computers for each student. They will be using Master Cam's just-released X-4 CNC programming software. The instructor will be able to access each student's work from his own computer. SAM students will now have the option to graduate with CNC machining skills.

Since the LSX Shootout is being held in conjunction with the NMCA World Finals, there's a lot more action in Memphis! Eleven other classes will be competing during the weekend as NMCA class championships are decided. Classes range from 6-second, 220-mph Pro Street cars to wild, wheelstanding 8-second Xtreme Street cars, and some classic iron in the nostalgia classes. Other action includes Jet car action where a jet-powered dragster will be shooting for the 300-mph zone. One of the crowd favorites during the weekend is the burnout contest, which will be held Saturday afternoon. Contestants heat the tires to the boiling point, and whoever wins the crowd over with their tire-blazing antics is the winner.

After taking over the reigns at GMHTP I've been itching to start a new program to bolster excitement for the magazine. But what? We are already the presenting magazine for the biggest and most competitive LS drag racing event ever that draws the fastest cars in the country, and even have our own signature special edition Camaro (about to be released). As my turbine started to spin while discussing an upcoming budget LS1 stroker build with Contributing Editor Chris Werner, it dawned on me that even with a relatively modest budget, huge naturally aspirated power is possible using mostly the General's engineering. Simply put: you can make serious street-usable horsepower and torque using factory components. But how much? And how would you do it? As they say, there is more than one way to skin a cat, we thought this would be a better question for some of the best LS builders in the country.

For those in the know, the annual Advanced Engine Technology Conference (AETC) is a tremendous resource for sharing information, opening the lines of communication, and making valuable connections within the industry. In years past, there have been many, many topics--but in its 19th year the masterminds behind the AETC decided, in their infinite wisdom, that 2008 was the perfect time to address LSx performance. Days away, the Performance Race Industry (PRI) show was about to reveal some of the most exciting new products for the Gen III and IV engine family, so what better time for a conference on the subject? GM High-Tech Performance was lucky enough to get its name on this fantastic event as one of the presenting magazines, and soak up all of the juicy nuggets of wisdom that the industry's best and brightest could doll out in a series of presentations. Follow along to learn everything you can about the history of the LS platform, machining and building big cube motors, valvetrain design, building reliable big boost combinations for max power, intake manifold design, and much more.

After last year's triumphant inaugural race, the LSX Shootout was back with a vengeance in 2008. Though gas prices had finally started to drop, the economy was still in the toilet and there was no telling what the turnout would be. But the folks at GM Performance Parts and the National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) were optimistic, as were we, that the growing interest in LSX performance might overcome those odds. By mid-afternoon on Friday October 10th, the car count was already well over last year's count (by about twenty or thirty), and by Saturday's eliminations even more LSX'rs had shown up. Many of the same faces that made last year so entertaining were back, however a few fresh faces made a major splash.

The LA Auto Show is an event that no enthusiast who lives in California should miss. I had the opportunity to visit the show this past November 18th and I was not disappointing at all. GM brought something for everyone. They had the silver 2010 Chevy Camaro and the Camaro Black concept which stood out and were drawing the crowds in.
