Crank end play is critical--too tight and the thrust bearing will burn up and create extra friction, too loose and the crank will move longitudinally and cause the rods to bind on their journals. The acceptable range is 3 to 8 thousandths, but Aaron prefers it to be on the tight side of this range. Our Cola crank was around 2.5 thousandths, a tad too tight even for Aaron. The binding was cured later on when it was discovered the thrust bearing diameter (No. 5 main) was too tight and a thousandths-over bearing was substituted.
