The two tires in our track test were the Nitto Extreme 555R II and the Kumho V700 Victoracer, both sized 275/40ZR17. The Nitto and the Kumho are the only two DOT road race tires on the market which are affordably priced for the amateur, hence their selection by us for the test.

The newer of the two tires, the Nitto Extreme R II, is available in only one size for now, the 275/40ZR17. It's perfect for most fourth-gen F-bodies and C4 Corvettes and in appearance resembles Nitto's Extreme R Drag Radial. Our test produced excellent results, even besting the lap times of the vaunted Kumho. We hope Nitto elects to build more GM sizes!

Our tire comparo was conducted at Virginia International Raceway with the help of the Kenny Brown Performance crew. Here, technicians measure tire temperatures and pressures as we came off the track from a test session. For the best lap times, it's critical to optimize tire pressure so that the contact patch is maximized. For project Thunderchicken, we found the best cold tire pressures were around 36 psi for the front and 34 psi for the rear. Obviously, this changes from track to track as each tire sees different load levels.

The test sequence began in earnest when the Kenny Brown crew pulled our Nittos off and bolted up the Kumhos. We ran two sessions with the Kumhos before swapping back to the Nittos again. It was great being able to test both tires back-to-back on the same day. We think it's the only way to get a truly accurate feel for two different tires.

Here we are with the Kumhos mounted on PWO Motorsport 280 rims. We're passing pit lane on the main straight at about 125 mph. The Kumho's had excellent grip and really inspired confidence. We expected the best lap times out of the Kumhos as they had softer rubber compound, but this actually hurt the lap times instead. Whenever we pushed aggressively to take full advantage of the Kumho's grip, the tires would overheat within a corner or two and we had to dial back before the lap was completed. When pushed hard, the Kumhos typically slide out starting near the apex and as throttle is added. It's a very controllable drift, but not very good for lap times.

This high-speed third-gear corner near the highest part of the track begins what is called "the roller coaster." We found this corner to be a good marker for how well the tires were doing. With the Nittos on (shown) we were able to audibly detect before the tires approached their limit of adhesion. The Nittos don't "scream" loudly like normal street tires, but they did pipe up enough to keep us from overheating them excessively. The Kumhos, on the other hand, got "oily" with little notice. Note that there is almost no weight on the left rear.
