Even experienced nitrous users can have problems. Pete Franco of Waldwick, N.J. had been using spray for years on his '85 small-block-powered Camaro when one day he mistakenly ran too high a bottle pressure. This resulted in a lean condition and detonation, breaking off part of the piston on the right. The fragments then circulated to most of the other cylinders as well, pummeling the pistons and cylinder heads. The moral of the story is that you can never be too careful!

Some engines have the mass air meter integrated into the throttle body, as is the case with this 3800 from a Buick GS. For such an application the nitrous nozzle would have to be carefully aimed so as to completely miss the sensor's filament, ideally being installed in the meter itself on the opposite side of the filament.

A bottle warmer is essential to any nitrous system. It is just a strap that is wrapped around the base of the bottle, but be careful, this sucker gets hot!

The exhaust pyrometer is just a metal probe that sticks into your exhaust pipe. It should be mounted as far upstream as possible, just after the oxygen sensor. Many kits use a screw-in bung so no welding is required.

Spark plug access on late-model vehicles can be a nightmare, but inspecting the plugs is an important way to see if you have your nitrous system tuned right.
