1988 Pontiac Firebird Formula - By Hook Or By Crook
Tire pressure is extremely important on a heavy street car with lots of torque. We've got a stock type suspension, 445 lb.-ft. of torque and a 700-4R with a 3.06 first gear ratio. A 2,800-rpm Vigilante converter multiplies the available torque more than two-fold at launch, thus making it very difficult on our Mickey Thompson ET Street tires. Repeated testing on this car and on our '94 Z28 has shown that 12 psi works best for this weight of vehicle. Here, editor Hunkins resets the pressure, which had risen after successive burnouts.
