Pro Torque Converter Install - Move That Thing
One final check is made to verify that all connections have been unhooked, then the trans is slowly dropped. The stock converter comes out by pulling it straight off--keep a bucket underneath to catch the fluid. While things are apart, there are a few things that can be checked for peace of mind. Chipped teeth on the flywheel can be a real pain, so check now since there would only be eight more bolts to remove if you needed to change the flywheel. The GM one-piece, pop-in type rear main seal would be easily accessed with the flywheel off too, so make sure that it is in good shape. Turning to the transmission, check the front seal, located right off the converter neck. This metal-clad piece can harden over a period of time, and the front bushing behind the seal can wear out as well.
