The Comp Cams valve springs required an air compressor and a way to fill the cylinders with air. We used a leakdown gauge to monitor how much pressure we used. A valve spring compressor is also a needed tool.

I had experienced pressure reading fluctuations with other regulators, and to the best of my knowledge, the little disk that comes with the TPIS unit seems to cure that, as our pressure was rock solid and never moved unknowingly.

Dan Garrity began the installation by disassembling the upper plenum starting with the removal of the throttle body. You can leave the coolant lines attached, just move the TB to the side out of your way.

To remove the upper plenum, you'll need to disconnect a few vacuum lines as well as the sensor plugged into the bottom of the plenum. Reinstalling the plenum can be made easier by loosening the bottom bolts of one side of the runners.

If you still have the smog equipment on the car, this will need to be moved in order to get the passenger-side valve cover off. It may be helpful to bend some of the lines out of the way as well, just be careful not to break them.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was no build up underneath the valve covers. The previous owners have evidently done well with regular oil changes.

This is what the pushrod hole looks like. If yours are similar, chances are you have non-self-aligning rocker arms like us.

The casting number is the one on the top. The last three digits, 081, tell us that these are the good heads. There are too many casting numbers to list, but Mortec.com has quite an extensive list and a brief explanation of each one. Many TBI-equipped cars use a swirl port head, which has a large obstruction in the intake passage. Stay away from those if possible.

A valve spring compressor is used to install the springs. Air is pumped into the cylinder to hold the valves up while you perform the swap. Otherwise you stand the chance of dropping a valve in which case you'll need to remove the cylinder head to fix it.

Adjustment procedure may differ from year to year. Ours started by tightening the valves to zero lash, or just enough to spin the pushrod with your fingers. Start with exhaust 1, 3, 4, 8 and intake 1, 2, 5, and 7 with the engine in position to fire the number one cylinder. Then, we turned the motor over one complete revolution so it was on number 6. Then we adjusted exhaust 2, 5, 6, 7 and intake 3, 4, 6, 8. Then you only need to warm up the engine and adjust them until they are all quiet.

We saw good results by having the TPS sensor dialed in. Unlike Mustangs, TPI cars seem to respond better to stock or close to stock settings.
