We used a Snap-On scanner to check the engine parameters. This is how we came to realize that the engine detected knock, or something that it may think is knock. Many engine sounds from lifters to rocker arms, even a noisy exhaust, can cause the sensor to read the noise and back timing off.

The Fastchip unit increased horsepower and torque across the powerband, and offered a noticeable seat-of-the-pants improvement. When it was over, Blue Thunder had an extra 17 horsepower and 18 lb.-ft. of torque. While we used a dyno to fine-tune the air/fuel ratio, the same could be accomplished at the track by making adjustments and checking the mph and ET after each change.

The MotorVac system cleans the injectors as well as the combustion chambers and valves. If your car won't pass emissions, this may be the cure. We also noticed that it improves performance, at least on higher mileage vehicles. While we only saw a peak gain of one horsepower and one foot-pound of torque, there was as much as a five horsepower gain in from the low through the midrange.

Desperate to get the number, I pulled the air filter for every ounce of power. However, the number was hiding in the 60-foot time.

Roy and Stacey (not pictured) Fender, and Dale Hawkins of F-body Motorsports happened to be at Englishtown for a High Performance Pontiac magazine shootout with their 11-second LS1 bird, and generously offered their M/T ET Street tires and skinnies mounted on lightweight Weld Draglites. With a failing limited slip unit in the 9-bolt, Blue Thunder could barely spin both tires long enough to put any heat in them. But the track had the teeth of a Saber Tooth Tiger, and when combined with the Mickey Thompsons, allowed Blue Thunder to achieve maximum--a 13-second quarter-mile elapsed time.
