The completed Vortech system, PN 4GJ218-010SQ (satin finish), brings tears to the eyes of any GM musclecar aficionado. The reasonable $5,686 price hopefully doesn't, though with being yelled at and perhaps forced to sleep on the couch by one's spouse for buying this instead of a new bathroom, it might bring the aforementioned tears indirectly.

The only outward sign of any sort that this GTO is supercharged is the aftercooler water reservoir sitting just behind the front fascia. That, and the Vortech license plate frame of course. You can see on the plastic reservoir a gold threaded insert that was unused for mounting purposes. We just might spray it black for further invisibility. While the reservoir seems to take up much of the existing grille space, we aren't too worried about lack of flow to the radiator as there are plenty of other openings for air to get in, including the Pontiac-trademark kidney grilles above.

TT Performance uses state-of-the-art equipment at its Clifton, NJ shop, and made sure not only that we were making 447.5 horses, but also that we were doing it safely. The GTO was wired up to a monitor to record ignition timing, knock retard, and a myriad of other data in real-time, and wideband O2 sensors made sure we were in the money spot of air/fuel ratio. No custom tuning whatsoever has been done at this time; we were simply evaluating Vortech's tune.

Talk about an improvement: zero loss at the bottom and a ton gained up top! Our wideband O2 showed the mixture just starting to lean out above six grand; any more revs would have likely overtaxed our stock fuel pump. Also, data monitors noted that engine timing was set very safely and conservatively, indicating that gains from a custom tune could be significant.

One of the few post-installation issues encountered involved this pesky vent hose running from the lifter valley to the intake manifold. Designed to remove oil vapor from the engine crankcase while the intake manifold experiences vacuum conditions, it was not altered during the original installation, allowing compressed air to enter the interior of the engine under boost.

The braided oil feed line was not tightened securely enough during the original installation, yielding a very slow oil leak that we didn't even notice until we got underneath the car to change the oil. Moral of the story: tighten it, but don't strip it. (Easier said than done, right? Hey, don't pretend you've never stripped anything!)

Contact between the hood liner and discharge pipe leading from the blower to the charge cooler yielded this unsightly residue burned onto the pipe. The residue came off using some rubbing alcohol, but in order to keep it from coming back, we knew that the hood liner would have to be modified. Note that the culprit was the particular discharge pipe that actually gets hot; the pipe leading from the charge cooler to the throttle body stays quite cool, as does the charge cooler box itself.

A box cutter is the tool of choice for cutting the hood liner, which is a foam-like material designed primarily to quiet engine noise. We could have removed the entire liner, but GM left much of the underside of the hood primed, not painted. Therefore, we simply cut around the burnt areas, being careful not to damage the windshield washer fluid lines beneath.

The brass fitting that is installed into the side of the supercharger needs to be periodically removed and cleaned in order to ensure proper supercharger oiling. Here, the oil feed line is being removed in preparation for taking the fitting out. Remember, no sealant of any kind is to be used on any of these threads, or else you risk clogging of important oil passages and extreme (read: expensive) blower damage.

While BMW may claim to be the Utimate Driving Machine, a Vortech-blown GTO is perhaps best described as the ultimate ass-kicking machine. It drives and rides arguably just as smoothly as its Bavarian brethren, and at the same time has enough grunt to embarrass just about anything with M-power--all for a fraction of the price, and without having to dress all preppy, either. Not the GTO we remember from 40 years ago, perhaps, but one that puts the overall performance of the original to shame.
