Cylinder Head Testing - LS2 Dyno Thrash Part II: Head Shootout

We're back on the dyno at Livernois Motorsports--this time we're trying to find out all we can about aftermarket LS2 cylinder heads. With five sets of hot LS2 heads ready for testing, "Top Fuel" Dom really got a workout. All testing was done at the same engine and room temperatures with nearly identical 12.5-12.8:1 air/fuel ratios.

What a lineup! We put together four aftermarket LS2 aluminum heads (AFR, Dart, Edelbrock, TFS from left to right) and one ported stock head (the Stage III Livernois Motorsports LS2 head) to compare to the stocker (far right)...

Overseeing the action at Livernois Motorsports was their vibrant, young owner, Dan "The Desert Eagle" Millen. Dan is at ease swapping LS2 heads or running 6.90s in the company's 10.5W-tired Outlaw car. Having this kind of presence "on the scene" is what separates good shops from great ones. It's nice knowing that the guy who is building your 11-second street car is out running 6-second quarter-mile passes on the weekends. Dan gets it.

Thanks to Kook's Headers for hooking us up with their new LS-specific dyno headers. These things are perfect for what we were working on. They feature 1.875-inch primaries, stainless steel material, and unquestionable quality. Here, Dom and Dan work over our LS2 crate engine. The AFR heads have been tested, and the Lingenfelter Edition Edelbrock LS1 heads are waiting on the sideline to get in the game.
Cylinder Heads Dyno
Here's a look at what goes on at the controls of a Superflow 901 engine dyno. Dom is finishing up the final assembly of the engine, connecting all sensors, and verifying that the water brake is functional. Dan is going through the software that will track engine performance as well as all vital data of the run.
