If you've owned any Gen II, III, or IV-powered 1994 or newer vehicles, one of the shown flash memory-based units has been responsible for controlling the powertrain. The evolution of GM's controllers has paralleled that of most other electronics: they keep getting faster, smarter, and smaller. Speartech Fuel Injection Systems, www.speartech.com, is a great source for picking up controllers, tuning harnesses, and even complete injection packages for retro-fits. Speartech is run by John Spears. John is an ex-GM engineer and GM powertrain whiz. His wealth of experience with GM controllers, combined with his passion for performance, enables him to stay at the front of the pack when talking tuning.

All '94 and newer Gen II LT1/LT4 powertrain controllers appear similar from the exterior. Similar looking four-connector, finned aluminum body controllers were actually found under the hood of many GM vehicles, including non-V-8 applications during the same era. These units featured a unique access panel giving way to the popularly swapped (for an LT4 version) 'knock module.'...

...One of the first aftermarket 'tuners' to crack into the flash-based controllers was Ken Kelly, creator of "LT1 Edit" (and eventually LS1 Edit, www.carputing.com). Ken's rich history with flash-based GM controllers was an invaluable knowledge source in creating this editorial.
