In the last installment we discovered exactly what happens when you combine too much timing, cast pistons, and 150 horsepower worth of nitrous on our LT1 Formula Project. With the help of Golen Engine Service we now have a 383 short-block with a forged rotating assembly, and our Dart heads were treated to some hand porting. So that left only one weak link, the stock PCM. While the OBD I originally equipped in the '94 Formula was sufficient to achieve our power and e.t. goals, it had become a very large problem due to a lack of aftermarket support and limited datalogging. Plus with the help of EFI Connection's 24x system, and an LS1 PCM commanding control over the Gen II, we could expect better driveability and possibly even better fuel mileage. Though on the Formula we had previously relegated the Opti to minimal duty thanks to the LTCC ignition box, LT1 enthusiasts will greatly appreciate this kit's Opti-free operation with eight LS coils supplying the spark. It is also important to note that the EFI Connection kit comes with a brand-new, OEM quality wiring harness-something every crusty LT1 could use.
With the help of EFI Connection and AntiVenom in Sefner, Florida, the LT1 Formula would once again breathe life through its K&N intake, Pacesetter headers, and Mufflex 4-inch exhaust. Follow along as Greg Lovell of AntiVenom helps us install our Golen 383 and EFI Connection 24x kit in the freshly painted engine bay, and then manipulates the HP Tuners software to get us back in action.

The hard parts in the EFI...

The hard parts in the EFI Connection 24x kit, which will effectively convert our previously OBD I-controlled LT1 to the LS1 PCM, contain a beautifully machined billet front cover (from TPiS), the 24x reluctor wheel for the crank snout, crank sensor, 1x cam reluctor with hardware, and the LSx cam sensor/housing as well as the EFI Connection throttle body plate.

Golen Engine Service was happy...

Golen Engine Service was happy to install these hard parts, as it has for many customers, along with a brand-new Comp Cams High Energy Timing Chain Set (PN 3207) on our 383 before it left the shop. Though this motor is quite potent, it is by comparison mild, so this heavy-duty single roller setup is more than adequate.

I removed the harness and PCM in the interim while waiting for the motor to arrive.

Having been through the joys...

Having been through the joys of installing the 355 a year or so ago, I left installing the new Golen 383 up to Greg Lovell at AntiVenom who is undoubtedly more skilled and efficient. He had the LT1 long-block in the previously vacant engine bay, and bolted down to the stock K-member in less than an hour using our engine hoist and some muscle. Justin magically appeared for this shot-I give him credit for at least appearing to be useful.

The EFI Connection wiring...

The EFI Connection wiring harness is custom-made with OEM or better quality wires (enclosed in loom wherever possible) and connectors. No hokey O2 extensions, like we had on previously, are needed for your long-tubes as well as your nitrous system or electric water pump as long as you order it with said options. The minute you hold this harness in your hands you will know it is quality, all the way down to the labels it has for every connector. Also pictured is the 99+ LS1 PCM provided in the kit, its increased processor speed and tunability make it ideal for building the ultimate street car.
