Once the boost (stock 13 psi) is cranked up on a Turbo Buick, bigger injectors are needed to prevent a lean condition. We stepped up to Racetronix 42-pound, flow-matched injectors (PN 01D030X). The stock 28-pound injectors were tired and couldn't handle the additional juice flowing from the new Walbro 340 fuel pump and "Hotwire" harness (also from Racetronix) we installed in Part 1. Since we're messing with a 20-something-year-old motor, we upgraded to the Racetronix Injector Harness (PN RX-G77-INJ-A) to replace the baked old wires and connectors.

On the left is the new 42-pound injector that features a tri-cone spray pattern. Notice the stock 28-pound injector has only a single-cone spray pattern. The bigger injectors should be able to support our projected buildup for this TB.

Here, the high-mileage mill sports its new injectors and harness after install. The high-quality (better than stock) harness features numbered connectors for their appropriate cylinder location. All the injectors and connectors fit quite nicely.

It's necessary to change the chip when changing injector size on these early EFIs. Upon first firing it up with the bigger injectors and 28-pound chip the Buick belched black smoke. We asked our friends from Cotton's Performance to burn us a chip for the larger 42-pound injectors. Afterwards it ran smoother and cleaner.

We were back on the Tune Time Performance Mustang dyno to be sure the A/F (air/fuel) ratio was safe. With 2 psi more boost (from 17 to 19 psi) we were certain to see more power. The A/F was lean yet safe at 12.1 (11.6 to 12.0 is ideal) only because we mixed in 5 gallons of race fuel to protect the high-mileage mill.

The turbo-torque-maker was now at over 400 lb-ft (from 358 to 405 lb-ft). We were impressed to see gains of 47 lb-ft torque and 2 hp from only changing injectors and the chip.

These old MT 26x8.5 slicks were mounted on 1970's era 15x8 Vette wheels to ensure clearance and hook. If we didn't heat 'em up with a 3-4 second burnout, they would spin (haze) at 60 to 100 feet out when the turbo spooled up to full boost.
